About the Provider
Hi- I’m Selena. I support families and children of all types navigate life’s challenges with knowledge and empathy. I’m an educator, full-spectrum doula, family advocate, and writer in New York City. Born and raised in the Bronx, by a large Black-Indigenous Caribbean family — I’ve spent much of my life working to bring equitable access to education and healthcare.
My journey in education and advocacy began young—watching my mother work as a community organizer and advocate for immigrant communities. Inspired to do my part, I eventually went on to earn her MA in Education from Columbia University, Teachers College and then my MLIS from Syracuse University. After years of working as an educator—I entered health advocacy following an unexpected high-risk pregnancy.
Advocating for my child, who has a severe chronic-illness, quickly became my second job. And working with parents of babies and young children navigating the complexities of the medical system soon became my north star. That experience transformed the way I look at health, leading me to community health advocacy at one of NYC’s major children’s hospitals, bringing together families and healthcare professionals.
Thinking of how to bridge the gap between education and holistic family advocacy, I began my birthwork journey. And that’s how we got here. Nurtured was founded with the goal of providing holistic, whole person family advocacy and modern doula care.
